The purpose of You Belong is to help you be independent and successful doing the work that you do well. Through a variety of online and paper-based tests, our vocational evaluation helps us learn about your interests, desires, skills, and abilities. Don’t worry, though. There are no right or wrong answers to these tests. The evaluation is like taking a snapshot in time – we are seeing where things are at the moment and making recommendations based on that information. Once we have your results, we determine which areas are the best match for you to ensure that you are in an environment where you can thrive!
Is there an occupation that interests you that you want to learn more about? Career Exploration puts you in touch with employers so you can ask questions, shadow, observe, and possibly even sample the work they do on a daily basis. After meeting with you to understand your interests, we will start scheduling opportunities in your community, like informational interviews and tours, so you can learn more about the people and the work. We can also determine certain criteria that might be needed for some occupations like certifications, educational requirements, salary information, local open positions, and more.
If needed, you might be asked to take part in a simple Community Based Assessment. The goal of this evaluation is to learn more about who you are and determine the area of work that will benefit you the most. We look at things like interpersonal skills, how well you stay on task, attendance, work behaviors and tolerance, and how you respond to supervision. Then, once we understand you better, we will have a better grasp on what your strengths and weaknesses are and will be able to place you in the best environment.
Our staff at You Belong is ready to connect individuals who are 14 and up with Pre-Employment Transition Services (or Pre-ETS), which are intended to help those with disabilities get ready for post-secondary education and employment opportunities. These Pre-ETS services include Job Exploration Counseling, Work-Based Learning, Instruction in Self-Advocacy, Counseling on Post-Secondary Opportunities, and Workplace Readiness Training; and they are open to individuals with learning, behavioral, mobility, sensory, and mental health disabilities. You Belong’s “YOU Learn YOU Earn” program is designed to teach you about the world of competitive work available to you through our Summer Youth Work Experience Program. Work with us to explore career options and learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. All of this will better prepare you for when you are ready to enter the workforce!

longer on site, you will continue to have a strong support system among your coworkers and
managers.
You Belong’s service does not end once you’ve found a job. Our staff will continue to check-in
for at least 3 months after you have started your new job to make sure that everything is going
well. Currently, over half of the people who started their job search with us have been placed
and successfully transitioned into their new workplace!

Of course, not everything works out every time. So if you and your Counselor agree that you
need or want something different, we will keep working with you to find a position that is better
suited for you!
